A furry face peeps from behind a patch of scrub.
The costal cliffs might make for fantastic scenery, but it was not as good as a Redwood Forest for hiding in. Especially if you were a black and white border-collie.
Jess grinned and called to her wayward pet, “Holly, come here!”
Holly barked once and began bounding over to her owner.
“Where shall we go next, girl?”
They looked around, taking in the breathtaking Elysian Cliffs that looked out onto the Sea of Dreams.
Mum always has the late shift on Friday nights.
I like to wander around Main Street while I wait. She doesn’t like it, but I like the way things look under the stars; magical and mysterious, like anything could happen. I usually end up at Ocean’s End Public Library, which is at the opposite end of Main Street to the tiny hospital where my mum works.
If I’m being honest, I probably spend too much time at the library.
I realised this a few minutes ago when the librarian said hello because she knew me by name.
“Hello Madelyn, how are you?”
Although maybe it had been the moment when I knew her by name and had greeted her with it.
“Mr Matthews is going to kill us.” said James in shocked disbelief.
“Only if we get caught,” smirked Josh, wiping paint off his hands onto his ripped jeans.
“And I thought your tattoos would get us in trouble!” James groaned.
“They didn’t get us in trouble, just me, remember?” Josh questioned as he packed up the spray cans littered across the asphalt.
“Then there were the piercings,” James continued, nervously running his hands through his white-blond hair.
“That wasn’t so bad either; you were only grounded because you didn’t tell your folks in advance.” He pulled a stick of pink gum from his pocket, popping it into his mouth.
“I swear, if this goes badly-”
“Relax,” Josh laughed, swinging the backpack full of condemning evidence onto his back. “we’re not going to get caught. And even if we do, this would be considered a public service. Not vandalism. The wall needed repainting anyway.” He blew a pink bubble, the sugary mix snapping and then collapsing.
