Beka Cooper is a trainee Dog in the Lower City. It's a tough beat, but it's where she was born. Shy Beka's talent is listening to the ghosts that the pigeons carry, the cries of the unhappy dead. When she hears of a brutal underlord committing crimes against the children of her city it is up to her and her Dogs to see justice done. Beka Cooper: Terrier- By Tamora PierceI seriously enjoyed this book. I know I say that a lot, but it's particularly true in this case. I have read other Tamora Pierce books set in the world of Tortall and liked them, but, so far as the books of her's I've read, this one takes the cake. The writing style is smooth and engaging, I don't normally go for mysteries, but this one is really good. I'm not entirely sure this book is a mystery, but Beka is a Dog (the term in the book for a law-enforcement officer), and there are mysteries throughout as she investigates crimes.
Ok, let's go straight to the good stuff! I adore the characters. They are diverse and colourful, they have hobbie, quirks, feelings, emotions! I love these characters! They are actually realistic unlike some fictional humans out there. Not everyone who doesn't like the main character is evil. Halelujah! I recently re-read Pierce's Lioness Quartet and wow, was this a problem. I really loved the series a couple of years ago, but now...I guess it was alright. But I'm not writing to review that series, so lets get on with the real job. The world of Tortall. This world is pretty good at best, but when you go into detail within a city. That's really nice. There is the Lower City, which is magnificent, it has character, and there's a place called the Cesspool. It's, as guessed, the bad part of the bad part of town. There are individual street names. There are shops and homes and markets and it's just great when the environment is apart of the story. Even when it isn't, it's always awesome to see an author take the time to properly describe the surroundings of the characters. The author has also created her own slang for the city. It's amazing and fun too see. And the author actually uses the slang all the time! It just creates the best kind of feeling, when you are immersed in a well created world. Lastly (and in absolutely no way leastly), the plot is a wonder. Like I mentioned before, mystery is not my first choice, but this one was great. The plot revolves around one or two (no spoilers! ;) ) mysteries. So I don't spoil, I will say no more, but even those of you who don't normally go for mysteries either will most likely enjoy this one. Right, well that's the end of the good stuff, so on to the bad stuff, of which there was only one concern. There is a tiny possibility that you may need some context e.g. reading the Lioness Quartet. I am not entirely sure since I read the Quartet first, but I believe that the Beka Cooper Trilogy will be able to stand alone. But for the record, if anyone discovers otherwise, tell me and I'll add it to this review. Did I mention I love the world of Tortall? An interesting fact is that throughout Pierce's Tortall books she explores different roles (e.g. Knight, Spy, Guard etc.) This develops, expands and completes the world of Tortall. It's a really good world, not my favorite, but pretty good. It doesn't mention sex other than she says she's done 'it' once and didn't really need to again. It doesn't expand. Canoodling is the closest it gets. Rating: 5/5 Age Recommendation: 14+ I absolutely recommend it to basically everyone, except my worst enemy, I wouldn't want him to enjoy it. So if you're looking for something good to read. Read this. It is so worth it. StoryGirl

Thanks! Sorry for the late (really late 😓) reply! I haven't tried Juliet Marillier, but I'll check her out 😁 I'm always looking for new good books!
