Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm A Supervillain -By Richard Roberts"Penelope Akk wants to be a superhero. She's got superhero parents. She's got the ultimate mad science power, filling her life with crazy gadgets even she doesn't understand. She has two super powered best friends. In middle school, the line between good and evil looks clear. I LOVED this book. It had adventure, magic, mad-science, superpowers, and secret identities! I'm not sure I could call it urban fantasy because even though it was set in L.A (Los Angeles), the culture, or sub-culture, of superpowers made it seem like a different dimension. It's probably science fiction, adventure and urban fantasy.
Penny was such a fantastic character, very relatable to a lot of girl teens. The story is written in her perspective. In my mind, I had so many fantasies of what super-powered me would look like and what I would do in this alternate L.A. She has two great friends and has good relationships with her parents and school mates. The book lightly explores growing up, school life in about year 8 (?) , and some moral and ethical decisions about super-villainy. This book is for young teens and, following the rule that my mum almost always used, is for about 12-14yr olds. It never goes to far as to be inappropriate, the worst is one kiss, but still manages to tamely touch on crushes and love. This is a good step for young developing readers as that is what they themselves are exploring, and is good to explore in a safe environment that never takes it too far. The only thing I didn't like, was that although there was excellent world building, the author never completely expanded on it. For instance; they would mention 'Evolution' (a dead superhero from a couple of decades ago), but the characters would never go into who killed him, why, or any other details. I enjoy a bit of mystery, but after awhile, this just started to get a bit annoying. I would absolutely recommend this book to young tweens and I hope they enjoy it as thoroughly as I did. I would give this book 4.3 out of five. There are two more full books in this series ('Please don't tell my parents I blew up the moon' and 'Please don't tell my parents I have henchmen'), and a prequel ('I did NOT give that spider superhuman intelligence'), also I believe that a forth full book coming out called 'Please don't tell my parents I have a nemesis', according to the authors blog; http://frankensteinbeck.blogspot.com.au/2017/03/hooray-for-complete.html You can purchase these books in book form on amazon (kindle and paper), and in audio form on Audible.
