The School StoryTwo middle school girls scheme to publish a book in this novel from Andrew Clements, the author of Frindle. My mum read Andrew Clements to me as a kid, and my favorite book was always 'The School Story'. I'm probably totally bias because of that fact, but it's still a great story. Especially good for a quick read, as I was shocked to find out when I finished it within a single night. I seem to remember it being a lot longer when I was a kid, but I guess a chapter every night can make anything seem long!
Well, that's definitely one of the things I like about 'The School Story'-that it's a pretty short read, but still good for airport waits and for filling time. It certainly doesn't have much action as it's realistic children's fiction. But if you, like myself, enjoy reading something with a little less action and fighting every once in a while, then it's probably the choice for you. Another thing I like about this book is the characters and the relationships. Andrew Clements gives adults and especially kids (in fact, all his characters in general), such a unique viewpoint in all his books and this one is no different. The relationships are completely real, true and normal (the good kind), and they don't have any of that manipulation or complication that some books have. The characters are also individuals with defining characteristics (for instance Zoe is a talker), and personalities. It's quite refreshing after recently reading books like Twilight (I wanted to see what all the fuss was about), to see that sort of real-life relationship. Another of the things I liked about this book is that it's good for all ages, proved recently when I read it again and still thoroughly enjoyed it. Another good thing is that it's a good stand-alone. Don't get me wrong, I love series, but it's so good to have a great stand-alone that doesn't feel unfinished, or like it should have a sequel. I give this a 5/5, and recommend it for all ages. It's definitely an awesome feel-good, stand-alone, short story. And also great for kids! I know I enjoyed it as a kid. It can sometimes be hard to find a good book for kids that's not too kid-sy, but not too adult-y/teen-ish. Well, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we have a winner! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Happy Reading! StoryGirl
