The behemoth is the fiercest creature in the British navy. It can swallow enemy battleships with one bite. The Darwinists will need it, now that they are at war with the Clanker powers. BehemothIt's true that a lot of the time the sequel, or any books after the first book (often called a 'one-hit-wonder') are not really as good as the original. But, as with the Behemoth, that's not always true. I really loved Leviathan, recommended to me by my awesome cousins, and Behemoth was absolutely awesome as well. There was revolutions, revelations and general brilliantness. I particularly liked the introduction of new characters and settings that are just as good as the last book.
What I liked, ok, as I said, I liked the introduction of new characters and setting that were just as good, if not better than the last book. The setting was much more important in this book and I really liked that Westerfeld took advantage of that with his rich descriptions and new characters. The new characters were just as important as the old ones, but happily, did not hinder the old characters development as people. The story still progressed beautifully and the wonderful new environment, people and plot, (yet still intertwining amazingly with the old one) only served to benefit the story. I felt the politics were much less of an element than before, though you could argue that a revolution has much more politics than before. Dylan/Deryn and Alex's relationship deepens (not necessarily in the way you might think) and friendships all around develop. Right, what I didn't like... Although there were some frustrating characters in the last book, they all seemed to become less so. But with the taking away of them, entered an incredibly annoying and curious reporter. And though while he was obnoxious, I think that was the intention of the writer and it makes you care even more about the main characters and story. Honestly, I'm sure that some of you pessimists can come up with more 'faults', but I don't think I can. (SPOILER ALERT) Dylan did accidentally get kissed by a girl while pretending to be a boy, which could be awkward for anyone particularly sensitive to things like that. (SPOILER END) Anyway, LOVED the book and would recommend it to most people. I give it a 5/5 for the multiculturalism, a fun setting, new characters and sparkling storyline. I hope you read it and enjoy it! StoryGirl
